Hello Abby! The thrusts to the neck are called tsuppari, definitely a legal technique as you know, but I guess like any other sumo move, appreciated to various amounts by various people. I (Amy) enjoy tsuppari when it’s used as one technique amongst many, but not so much when it’s the only thing a rikishi does. Daieisho is someone else who is awesome at tsuppari and often wins with it, and I do enjoy his sumo. I think so many moves in sumo can cause injury, yanking forward by the arms, twisting, etc. You’re right that tsuppari can be very brutal and hard to watch sometimes though!

I am so glad yall mentioned Onosato’s dad. It was both hilarious and heartwarming and NHK milked his reactions so much it was almost a joke. An observation about Abi, I really want to like him (since we share name a bit) but he seems to love to go for the neck area, and I know it’s legal movement but it just bothers me. I’m very new to sumo, but is this a known thing or am I reading too much into it? It just feels incredibly dangerous and purposeful and a bit cheap.
